Donations from generous individuals and businesses help us to enhance the convention experience for Wisconsin's veterans. The American Legion was chartered in 1919 and has been supporting Veterans, their families and their communities for over 100 Years! The over 50,000 Legionnaires in over 500 posts throughout the state are fulfilling this mission through the following:
Veterans:
• Camp American Legion is a place where Veterans and their families can go for a week and relax, rehabilitate, heal and reconnect. Camp serves over 1100 disabled veterans each year at a cost to the Department of more than $1000 per day.
• Service Office ensures our Veterans are getting proper medical assistance and benefits they earned through their service. They are currently tracking over 31,000 clients and over the course of the last 12 months have assisted veterans and their
families in attaining over $393 million dollars in due benefits.
Their Families:
• Troop and Family Support Grants help families of deployed troops meet their financial obligations both while they are deployed, and once they come home. Grants have been used for child care, automobile expenses, rent and more. One
family that was assisted with child care while battling a serious illness and deployment said “The Legion called even after the fact to see how we were, to see how Kayla was feeling and always asked ‘How can we help, how can we further
assist you’ and you are just blown away.”
Their Communities:
• American Legion Baseball is part of our commitment to youth, by supporting these talented young men and teaching sportsmanship and patriotism.
• Badger Boys State and Badger Girls State teaches young men and women how our government is formed, and how to be better citizens.
• Wisconsin American Legion Law Enforcement Career Academy is an opportunity for young men and women completing their junior or senior year of high school, interested in a career in Law Enforcement, to attend the State Patrol Academy and experience what a career in Law Enforcement will be like. Along with these programs, there are many other scholarship programs, reaching 8600 Youth per year and awarding over $34,000 in scholarships. The American Legion also assists veterans with homelessness, unemployment and so much more.
